CENSORSHIP

OIL ON CANVAS | 2012

This piece actually went along with the writing piece that I have called "Let's Talk." In a way, this piece was a performance piece. As I talked about censorship, I splattered black paint all over this painting. The painting is of two nude models, to represent the "true self" and give it a visceral quality. For what is scarier than this censorship? Censorship of oneself.

The point of my action was to show that general censorship leads to censorship of oneself. And in turn, the masterpieces that hang in the museums today, or the literary pieces we read, or the music we hear, etc.. all would not be possible.

The grand finale of the performance piece was to pull the plastic cover off the painting, revealing the image once more. One should never feel the need to keep their mouths closed and have no opinion. Words should be spoken and conversations should be had.
